Mission Statement:

The mission of the Campus Sustainability Coalition is to transform the University of Alberta into a participating sustainable member of society. Through a partnership among students, faculty, staff, and community members, we are promoting excellence and leadership in education, innovation, and stewardship to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability to more ensure the health and well-being of present and future generations of people, both locally and globally. Only by achieving sustainable operations and teachings will the University of Alberta become a world leader and model of a global citizen worthy of the following.

Mandate: The Campus Sustainability Coalition is designed as a working group where faculty, staff, students and members of the Edmonton community can work together, creating leadership in sustainable development. As Alberta’s leading academic institution, the University of Alberta must display leadership and innovation for others to aspire to, and learn from, in terms of environmental sustainability. Together, the Campus Sustainability Coalition will work with all student groups, members of both arts and sciences communities, ancillary, residence, academic and administrative systems. A democratic arrangement of peoples will help change or replace behaviours and technologies that result in environmental harm. Should no apparent alternatives exist, or should the best available technology be insufficient, the Campus Sustainability Coalition will work with the innovative researchers in our community towards solutions.

Vision: Movements to improve the world require the innovation, energy, creativity and vision of the youthful generation inheriting the world. The knowledge, wisdom and experience of the older generation are also required to help avoid pitfalls and provide guidance. Environmental sustainability will ensure the ongoing health of the planet for future generations, so the youngest generations must take control and create our own future: one of maximum biodiversity, equally ample supplies of clean air and water as the 20th century, and a peaceful world free of hardship and poverty for all.

Goals:

(1) Entrenching sustainability into the actions of the University community, academic programs, and operations of the University of Alberta.

(2) Raising the profile of the sustainability movement on campus and providing a hub for the separate, isolated student, faculty and administrative groups to gather around and work together.

(3) Lobbying the University of Alberta Offices of the President and Vice-Presidents to create an official university sanctioned department or office of environmental sustainability. With greater resources offered by paid positions, continuity of the area will be assured, and the rate at which the University of Alberta reduces its ecological footprint will increase.
