Transit Riders'Union of Edmonton (TRUE)

1) The 2nd Annual TRUE Transit Challenge

TRUE once again has issued the following challenge to Edmonton City Council, as well as to Edmonton-area Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), ETS administration & staff and to the broader public; to give up their private vehicles and rely on transit for the week of November 17th through November 23rd.

A media event will be held to launch the challenge on Monday, November 17th at 11:30AM on the front steps of Edmonton City Hall (1, Sir Winston Churchill Square).

A public forum, in which the majority of participants from the challenge are expected to participate, will be held on Monday, November 24th from 12:00 Noon to 1:00pm at the CBC Stage in Edmonton City Centre East (#123, 10062-102 Ave) as a wrap up event.

The Un-Mall:
A Student Exchange of Free Stuff
Main floor Agriculture-Forestry building (north of SUB) -- behind the "cookie" (aka tree slice)
Thursday Nov 27 & Friday Nov 28
10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Items can be dropped off during Un-Mall on Thursday and Friday, or earlier in the week at the ECSA office (2-04C in GSB).

Examples of acceptable items:
books + magazines, clean clothing + accessories
school + office supplies, games, music + instruments
posters, plants, small working appliances (toaster, lamp, etc), field equipment (vest, clipboard, etc), camping gear
art supplies

Unacceptable items:
no dirty, smelly or broken stuff, no food
no large appliances (no microwaves, freezers, etc)
no large furniture (no arm chairs, kitchen tables, etc)

All items that are not taken at the end of the event will be donated to an appropriate not-for-profit organization.

The Women's Centre now has official office hours. Feel free to stop by
the Centre at any of the following times:

Monday: 10am - 4.30 pm
Tuesday: 9.30 - 11.30am, 2 - 4.30pm
Wednesday: 10am - 4.30pm
Thursday: 10am - 12pm, 3.30 - 4.30pm
Friday: 10am - 4pm

Volunteer Opportunity:

In addition to opening the Centre doors, we invite our volunteers to help out with other Centre-related tasks, such as:
· updating resource materials
· keep the office neat/organized and with enough supplies
· create/organize events or activities that would increase WCC awareness on campus

We invite you to bring your enthusiasm and knowledge of feminism/women’s issues and create an safe, friendly, and open atmosphere for yourself and your feminist community members

Friends of the Lubicon Alberta

News Update:

Documentary - filming complete!!!

Amnesty International and FOLA members have made a documentary of the Lubicon to be released internationally this fall. It focusses on the processes of the extractive industry in the area and the relationship of oil companies with the Lubicon.
The film will be part of a global campaign on the link between discrimination and impoverishment. FOLA is colaborating with Amnesty on the project and on plans for its release.

JHR (Journalists for Human Rights) call-out:

Are you passionate about human rights and social justice issues? Ever thought of pairing that passion with writing or photography?

The U of A's Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is seeking volunteer writers, photographers, and artists for our human rights publication - Speak News, an electronic newsletter sent out four times a year. Upcoming issues are slated for December 2008, so you still have time to contribute!

Speak News is part of a growing grassroots media movement aiming to cover those stories and viewpoints that often go under-reported in the mainstream media. Speak News aims to cover human rights and social justice news stories occurring at the local, national and international levels, in addition to presenting alternative opinions on these issues.

An evening of intense poetry, politics and discussion

Free admission and an open mic to follow for new poets.
